Dear Neighbor,
In my last year in the Michigan Senate, I am looking forward to serving you and our community at the Capitol, addressing the challenges our residents are facing both in our backyard and across the state.
With lots of exciting work already underway this year, I want to reflect on some of the important progress made and victories won in 2025 and the ways in which we’ll build on this legislation in the coming months.
From protecting access to health care, securing record investments in public education, and more, my colleagues and I fought for you every step of the way.
And we are continuing to do so in 2026. If you ever have any questions about the work we’re doing, want to share concerns, or need assistance in navigating a state department, please don’t hesitate to reach out to my office at (517) 373-7888 or SenJMoss@senate.michigan.gov. We’re here to help.
Take care,
Jeremy Moss

Improving Government Accountability & Transparency
The Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) allows you to request access to documents from within your local and county government, school districts, and state departments. But Michigan’s law specifically exempts state lawmakers and the governor’s office from the act, blocking you from fully understanding the decisions from your state government — one of the few states in the country with these egregious exemptions.
After working for a decade to increase government transparency, the Senate finally passed my bipartisan legislation in 2025 to expand FOIA in Michigan to all of state government. The Speaker of the House, however, has publicly stated he refuses to take them up and continues to block state files from public scrutiny. Nonetheless, I will continue to push this legislation across the finish line to provide the taxpayers of Michigan with the integrity and accountability they deserve from their elected officials.
Senate Democratic Wins in the Last Year
Providing A Better Future for Moms and Babies
Rx Kids is the nation’s first prenatal and infant cash prescription program proven to support moms and babies. We helped provide budget funding to launch the program in Pontiac and Detroit and expand it to other parts of the state. Most recently, we fought hard to successfully secure a landmark investment of $270 million to further expand Rx Kids. Over the next three years, this funding is expected to reach nearly 100,000 babies, representing approximately one-third of all births in Michigan.
Protecting Medicaid
With significant victories in the state budget, we were able to counteract some of the worst impacts of the “One Big Beautiful Bill” — like avoiding a one billion dollar hit to Michigan. We undid tax breaks for wealthy corporations, protected food assistance benefits like SNAP, and saved Medicaid in Michigan, halting what was sure to be a catastrophic domino effect felt statewide.
Cutting Taxes and Making Everyday Life More Affordable
The cost of living just seems to be getting more and more expensive, and between housing, groceries, child care, and doctors’ visits, the costs add up quickly.
That’s why one of the first actions I took in the Senate Majority was to pass the biggest tax relief initiative Michigan has seen in decades, which cut taxes by $1 billion by repealing the retirement tax and expanding tax credits for working families. But our work didn’t stop there! As part of our bipartisan 2026 state budget, we eliminated state taxes on tips, overtime, and Social Security, so you can keep more of your hard-earned paycheck.
What does this look like in action?
- No taxes on tips will save up to 300,000 Michigan residents an average of $400/year on their state taxes.
- No taxes on overtime will save up to 500,000 workers an average of $500/year on their state taxes.
- No taxes on Social Security will save up to 40,000 eligible seniors $500/year on their state taxes.
Continuing Our Progress in the Year Ahead
Ensuring Safe, Secure Elections for Michigan Voters
As Chair of the Senate Elections Committee, a top priority of mine is to ensure all eligible citizens can exercise their right to vote.
As we head towards another important election cycle, I will continue to prioritize legislation that ensures safe, secure elections for our voters and local clerks that make our elections possible. One way we can achieve this is with my legislation that would establish a Michigan Voting Rights Act to uphold the integrity of the state’s election process, making sure voters are both physically and legally protected and accommodated, and local election officials comply with state laws.

Lowering Costs and Putting a Stop to Price Gouging
To combat rising prices and ridiculous fees, I will continue to hold deceitful businesses accountable and shield Michigan consumers from unfairly priced goods and services. With the help of Attorney General Dana Nessel and my Democratic colleagues, I look forward to reintroducing my legislation strengthening Michigan’s price gouging laws. This would target price gouging on consumer goods, emergency supplies, lodging and energy products like gasoline or propane. We want to be sure everyone can afford what they need to get by.
Upholding All Michiganders’ Constitutional Rights in the Face of Lawless Federal Actions
Lawless immigration enforcement tactics have been increasing across the nation under the current federal administration. My colleagues and I introduced Senate Bills 508-510 to increase transparency and protect the safety of Michiganders, immigrant and non-immigrant communities alike. This legislation would prevent immigration enforcement from wearing face coverings for the purpose of concealing their identities, and prohibit warrantless immigration raids in sensitive locations such as schools, hospitals, and places of worship.
Senate Democrats will continue fighting to hold this administration accountable and demand a more just, safe future for all Michiganders.
