Earlier this week, Senate Elections and Ethics Committee Chair Jeremy Moss (D-Southfield), Sen. Darrin Camilleri (D-Trenton), Sen. Stephanie Chang (D-Detroit), Sen. Erika Geiss (D-Taylor) and Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson held a community forum in Detroit where they discussed the proposed Michigan Voting Rights Act (MVRA) and other recently passed election improvements.
“We’ve been steadfast in our mission to reduce barriers to voting in Michigan and we will continue this work with our Voting Rights Act to ensure accessibility to the ballot is legally protected,” said Sen. Moss. “Ahead of this important election, it is imperative that we fight against all forms of voter suppression and empower every citizen to exercise their right to vote free from discrimination and intimidation.”
The MVRA, Senate Bills 401–404, was introduced last year and will continue Senate Democrats’ efforts to improve every aspect of elections, ensuring voters are physically and legally protected throughout the process and local election officials comply with state law.

The governor also signed the Senate Bill 721 to make it easier for an individual to preserve an interest, claim, or charge on their marketable record titles.
Senate Bill 721, sponsored by state Senator Jeremy Moss, amends 1945 PA 200, known as the marketable record title act. This bill will extend the dates from March 29, 2024 to September 29, 2025 to give Michiganders more time to preserve their interest, claim, or charge within their marketable record title.
“I appreciate the collaborative efforts of Gov. Whitmer, my Senate and House colleagues, and all stakeholders involved in championing the passage of Senate Bill 721,” said state Senator Jeremy Moss (D-Southfield). “This legislation takes the necessary steps to modify the Marketable Record Title Act and will extend timelines for preserving property interests and reducing disputes.”

The Senate Oversight Committee reported Senate Bills 669 and 670 favorably, sponsored by Sen. Jeremy Moss (D-Southfield) and Sen. Ed McBroom (R-Waucedah Twp.). The bipartisan legislation would work to expand the application of the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) to the Michigan Legislature, the governor and the lieutenant governor all while uplifting more transparency within state government.
“There is no better way to mark Sunshine Week than to advance this legislation and demonstrate our commitment to shining more light on our work in the Capitol,” said Sen. Moss. “I look forward to finally bringing our effort to expand FOIA to a vote before the full Senate for the very first time.”
