LANSING, Mich. (September 1, 2023) — Serving as a Michigan Delegate for the American Irish State Legislators Caucus, Sen. Sue Shink (D-Northfield Twp.) has issued the following statement after her visit to Ireland to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the Good Friday Peace Agreement:

“The Good Friday Agreement was a landmark peace accord that ended decades of violence and brought stability and prosperity to Northern Ireland. The road to peace was long and difficult but, in the 25 years since the agreement was signed, the people of Ireland have seen a growth of commerce, opportunity and inspiration.”

“The ability of state legislators from across the United States and representatives from Ireland to have an open dialogue and work together for a brighter and shared future is an incredible testament to the power of peace and cooperation. I am humbled to have been chosen alongside my colleague, Sen. Mallory McMorrow, to represent Michigan on this historic trip, and I look forward to continuing to work with my fellow legislators and our Irish partners to strengthen the economic, social and cultural ties between our two nations.”

The American Irish State Legislators Caucus is a bipartisan network of current and former American Irish legislators and legislators who are friends of Ireland, from across the United States at the local and state levels of government, and their counterparts in Ireland at the local and national levels. Their mission is to foster and strengthen the longstanding relationship between Ireland and the United States of America. Note: This trip was self-funded and came at no cost to Michigan taxpayers.

The trip included meetings with Speaker Alex Maskey and representatives from the Northern Ireland Assembly; a visit to the Irish Parliament in Dublin to speak with legislators; conversations with community groups; and a gathering of the caucus to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the Good Friday Peace Agreement with Guest of Honor Bertie Ahern, former Irish Taoiseach and signatory of the peace accord. This historic event is the largest gathering of American Irish legislators and their supporters in history.
