This Week In The Legislature

In the first month of the new legislative session, Democrats have delivered on the promises made to families and communities across the state by passing tax relief for seniors and working families.
I was incredibly proud to vote in support of both repealing the tax on senior retirements and increasing the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) for working families. These policies are supported by a vast network of business leaders, community advocacy organizations and local governments, and will put money back into the pockets of some of our most vulnerable residents. They passed with bipartisan support in both the House and the Senate. You can learn more about what this tax relief means by reading more here:

Gov. Whitmer’s State of the State Address

Last week, Gov. Whitmer gave her annual State of the State (SOTS) address, outlining an optimistic and ambitious vision for Michigan’s future. We are in a unique position to reshape Michigan’s future by prioritizing investments in public education, infrastructure and workforce development to create new jobs and attract talent in high-paying and skilled industries. The governor’s State of the State address reflected these goals and I look forward to the corresponding budget presentation that will outline the path to successfully position Michigan to be competitive in a rapidly changing global economy.
Highlights from the SOTS Address:

    • Universal Pre-K for All to save families an average of $10,000 a year and ensure every 4-year-old in Michigan gets a great start.
    • Lowering MI Costs which includes repealing the tax on senior pensions and increasing the Earned Income Tax Credit for working families
    • “Make It in Michigan” plan which will focus on investing in talent, high-paying jobs and a more competitive, diversified economy by expanding eligibility for MI Reconnect
    • Protecting the rights of all Michiganders through repealing the 1931 abortion ban and expanding the state’s Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act to include the LGBTQ+ community.
    • Record investments in K-12 education
    • MI Kids Back on Track Plan to provide tutoring supports
    • Record investments in public safety
    • $1 billion for better training and oversight of law enforcement
    • Mental health resources for officers + in communities
    • Commonsense gun violence prevention policies, including universal background checks, safe storage laws and extreme risk protection orders to keep guns out of the hands of those who are a risk to themselves or others.
