When we increased the cannabis tax last year, I warned that this would not only destabilize a new and struggling legal cannabis market; but, also, that these new taxes would push buyers away, diminishing participation in the legal market and tax revenue along with it. This shift diverted revenue from host communities and k12 schools to roads while driving out-of-state and local buyers away from licensed operators.

The Senate passed my bill almost unanimously. This bill removes a requirement that pension administrators withhold state income taxes from retirement incomes and attest that they advised their clients properly.
Since we repealed the Republicans’ Retirement Tax, this requirement is no longer needed and this bill removes the outdated rule.
This is one more reminder of what happened with taxes during the only time in the last 40 years when Democrats controlled the state capitol: less taxes for retirees and low-income workers. ... See MoreSee Less

DTE just increased our electricity rates right after getting increase after increase approved in the recent years.
Now, they are announcing that they intend to come right back to residents for another rate increase.
This is unacceptable and the legislature needs to step up to fight these increases that are crushing residents.
We should immediately:
1. Pass Sen Hertel's legislation limiting the frequency of these increases.
2. Pass Sen Shink and my legislation to allow more efficiency and conservation projects to reduce rates (Virtual Power Plants).
3. Pass Communtiy Solar legislation to allow medium-sized solar arrays to be built when they save money for consumers.
We should also pass legislation to rebalance how rates are set. The 2014 law that shifted rates to residents should be rebalanced to provide relief to residents (PA 169 of 2014). ... See MoreSee Less
