Moments ago, the State Senate voted to restore funding to projects that House Republicans cut indiscriminately last week.

Here's the quick version: several community projects were approved in the 2024-2025 budget. Many of those projects were underway such as the renovations to a center that supports childhood victims of sexual assault or a new fire truck for Hamtramck. Despite the fact that they were debated and approved, House Republicans used an obscure budget provision to revoke these contracts if all of the money wasn't already spent. This is disruptive and wasteful; but, Republicans leaders said they wanted to use these groups and their projects as political leverage in other negotiations.

Now, the ball is in the Republicans' court. Do they want to restore funding to the projects that they recklessly cut midstream, like wigs for kids with cancer or shelter for homeless families, or do they want to continue using their own constituents as leverage for unrelated political fights?

At the Literacy Summit yesterday, Governor Whitmer indicated that her administration will focus on improving our literacy rates for her last year as Governor.

I am very excited to work with the Governor and her team to build on the new “science of reading” literacy laws that we passed last year. That legislation, sponsored by Sen Polehanki and myself and shepherded through the House by Rep Koleszar, ensures that we train educators and specifically teach kids on how to decode the written language.
