LANSING, Mich. (June 24, 2026) — Today, Michigan Senate Democrats passed Senate Concurrent Resolution 14 to lower gas prices and extend Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s energy emergency by 77 days. The resolution, sponsored by Sen. Darrin Camilleri (D-Trenton), had bipartisan and nearly unanimous support, and now heads to the House of Representatives for concurrence.

Executive Order 2026-4 was issued on April 2 and declared an energy emergency in response to skyrocketing gas prices driven by tariffs and the Iran war. The order saved Michigan drivers money at the gas pump by easing the requirements on fuel blends, allowing for the sale of higher vapor pressure gasoline. With the Executive Order expiring on July 1, it was on the Michigan Legislature to take up the fight and continue this effort.

“While the Iran War is the main driver of increased gas prices, there are steps we can take here in Michigan to alleviate some of the cost burden for residents,” said Sen. Camilleri. “By extending the governor’s emergency declaration and allowing a wider range of fuel blends to be sold in our state, we can lower costs at the pump and put a little money back in Michiganders’ pockets during the busy summer travel season. At a time when families are already feeling squeezed, every dollar saved matters.”

Michigan Senate Democrats continue to work to lower costs on essential needs for all Michiganders with their A Michigan You Can Afford agenda — which includes plans to make groceries, gas, and other household needs more affordable, cut utility bills, lower healthcare costs, and more. Sen. Camilleri has been leading the charge on tackling gas prices in particular, sponsoring Senate Bill 982 to prohibit dynamic pricing of gasoline. In March, he also introduced — and Senate Democrats passed — a resolution calling on Washington Republicans to reverse the Trump administration’s actions that have led to surging energy costs across the state and nation.
