DETROIT, Mich. (April 11, 2023) – Yesterday, Sen. Darrin Camilleri (D-Trenton), Chairman of the Senate Pre-K-12 Appropriations Subcommittee, and members of the House and Senate appropriations subcommittees on education funding met at Mumford High School in Detroit. The committee heard from local teachers, students, and union leaders and the discussion centered on the struggles teachers face in the classroom and what it would take to attract and retain great educators in Michigan, and it marked one of the first joint budget hearings ever held outside of Lansing.

“Last night’s testimony was eye-opening,” said Sen. Camilleri. “We heard from special education teachers, parents, students, and more, and their message was clear: they need our help, and they need a budget that works for them. It was a stark reminder of the high stakes of this work and who we’re doing this for. I’m more energized than ever to create a state budget that puts Michigan educators and students at the forefront.”

Sen. Camilleri also previously held a Senate PreK-12 Appropriations Subcommittee hearing at Yake Elementary School in Woodhaven, which focused on universal preschool.

As the House and Senate Pre-K-12 Budget deliberations continue, Sen. Camilleri, a former teacher himself, looks forward to doing so with students and educators at the forefront.
