LANSING, Mich. (June 30, 2026) — Sen. Stephanie Chang (D-Detroit) issued the following statement in response to the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling on Trump v. Barbara:
“As a proud daughter of immigrants, I am pleased with today’s United States Supreme Court decision in preserving the right to birthright citizenship, a basic American promise that was upheld more than a century ago in U.S. v. Wong Kim Ark. The Constitution is clear that ‘[a]ll persons born or naturalized in the United States and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside’ — if you are born in America, you are a citizen, full stop. We must all continue to defend core American values and ideas — including rights and dignity for immigrant and refugee communities. From elected leaders to community organizations and advocates, we must keep working to advance the promise of America and values of opportunity, justice and access.”
