Sen. Klinefelt Played Key Role in Effort to Improve Affordability, Accessibility of Life-Saving Medicine

LANSING, Mich. (Oct. 4, 2023) Today, the Michigan Senate passed legislation to create a Prescription Drug Affordability Board (PDAB) aimed at lowering costs and expanding patient access in Michigan. Sen.Veronica Klinefelt (D-Eastpointe) sponsored Senate Bill 484, which together with Senate Bills 483 and 485 (sponsored respectively by Sens. Darrin Camilleri and Kristen McDonald Rivet) will create an independent Prescription Drug Affordability Board (PDAB) in Michigan — as well as ensure medical service providers, insurance companies and Medicaid comply with the new legislation — to help lower prescription drug costs for all consumers.

“Relief for Michigan residents to afford prescription drugs is long overdue and I’m glad to help do something about it,” said Sen. Klinefelt. “This legislation will prevent price gouging and keep vital medicine affordable and accessible for everyone.”

With the ability to set upper payment limits on the most expensive prescription drugs, PDAB will play a critical role in identifying cost-saving opportunities. The Board would bring accountability, oversight, and transparency to the prescription drug industry. Its recommendations will serve as a valuable resource for residents, patients, medical professionals, and policymakers.

The PDAB represents a crucial step forward in the fight against rising prescription drug costs in Michigan. The board has the potential to make a lasting and positive impact on the lives of Michiganders, ensuring that they can afford their medications without sacrificing their financial stability or compromising their health.

A PDAB in Michigan has significant support from advocates including medical professionals and associations, policy experts, and patients, to name a few. The coalition of support highlights the importance for immediate intervention to alleviate the financial strain imposed by high prescription drug costs and promote equitable healthcare opportunities.
