Yesterday, the Michigan Senate passed SB 603-604, bills from me and Jeremy Moss to modernize our recount law!
For years, Michiganders on both sides of the aisle have been asking why outdated parts of our recount law were still in place.
Now, after working with clerks, advocates and Jocelyn Benson's team, we will make changes needed to bring our recount law in line with other states.
In the past, many precincts couldn't be recounted because the box had fallen and the seal was broken, or because a pollworker forgot to cross off the name of a voter who came into the wrong polling location. Human error shouldn't be a reason to not recount a precinct.
There have been several recounts that clerks and their staff had to implement even though the petitioner mathematically had no chance of changing the outcome through the recount. That won't be the case under our bill.
We make clear that a recount is a simple retabulation of the ballots -- NOT an investigation or an audit. We have other laws and procedures for that.
The bills also modernize the fees for recount petitions so that clerks can actually cover the cost of recounts!
The bills also update our automatic recount thresholds so that for very close elections, we will automatically go to a recount.
Our bills also update the recount law in many other ways, all with the support of the county clerks (both Republican and Democratic).
All in all, these bills bring greater clarity to our recount law, will help ensure that voters' voices are heard and strengthen our democratic process.

Election officials complaining about Michigan recount law see proposal to overhaul it

The legislation would increase the upfront costs for requesting a recount and require reviews of enough votes to change the outcome of a contest.1 CommentComment on Facebook
Even to stooge democrats this is pure evil. All this bill does is prevent people from questioning anything about the results of an election. The cost to file a recount has increased dramatically and there is a threat of prosecution if you dare question the legitimacy. How would this have effected the municipal election of 2017 in Detroit when it was stolen from Gilchrest? Only this time a republican would not get picked for a higher office if they cry foul.
A reminder that next Monday, I will be hosting a women's roundtable at Dose of Sugar-3630 Caniff St Hamtramck, MI 48212 from 4-5pm. Come out for some insightful conversations and delicious treats! ... See MoreSee Less
