LANSING, Mich. (May 22, 2026) — Today, parties reached a resolution to House Republicans’ unilateral defunding of critical programs in the state’s budget. Senate Appropriations Committee Chair Sarah Anthony (D-Lansing), who originally requested an attorney general opinion on this matter, issued the following statement in reaction:

“Matt Hall and House Republicans must enjoy losing legal battles because they sure are on a streak. This is the result the people needed — the Republican caucus single-handedly ripped funding away from some of Michigan’s most important programs and vulnerable people, just days before Christmas, violating both the Constitution and the promises we made as a state. This kind of depraved foolishness cannot go unchecked.

“Now that this case is settled, we can move forward with the actual work, and for me, that means delivering a quality, balanced state budget that’s negotiated and signed ahead of the July 1 deadline.”
