LANSING, Mich. (April 6, 2026) — Following President Trump’s request for $1.5 trillion in defense spending, Sen. Rosemary Bayer (D-West Bloomfield), chair of the subcommittee responsible for the Michigan Dept. of Lifelong Education, Advancement, and Potential (MiLEAP) budget, issued the following statement calling on him to not cut funding for child care to support his unpopular military actions that threaten our country’s economy:
“The loss of child care funding would be a crushing burden to our families, businesses, and our schools. Entire local economies would feel the impact. It would force people to make impossible choices — between paying for rent or health care, between keeping a job or staying home, between stability and crisis. Child care providers are already operating on razor-thin margins.
“The American public disapproves of the war with Iran that President Trump has started without authorization. We must not sacrifice the well-being of our children or the stability of our families and economy. President Trump, do NOT cut child care — increase it, as this is what our country actually needs.”
