Sen. Greene brings local perspective, experience to ongoing legislative efforts to prevent gun violence and improve public safety

LANSING, Mich. (June 4, 2026) — Yesterday, Sen. Chedrick Greene (D-Saginaw) voted to pass Senate Resolution 127 commemorating June as Gun Violence Awareness Month in Michigan.

“Gun violence continues to pose a threat to people and kids in my hometown of Saginaw, my Senate district, and the state and country as a whole,” said Sen. Greene. “As a parent, a public safety professional, and a responsible, law-abiding firearm owner, I have been proud to work locally on community violence intervention efforts and promote safe firearm storage and handling to keep our families safe. In the Senate, I will keep working to promote gun violence awareness and positive policy changes to help save lives, including passing yesterday’s resolution.”

Sen. Greene has been a public safety professional for 27 years, including working as a community liaison, and was Vice President of his local Crimestoppers. He is deeply committed to safe communities and strong support and investment in public safety.

Yesterday’s resolution is the latest in the Senate Democratic Majority’s ongoing fight to improve public safety and help prevent gun violence in the state. Senate Democrats have championed commonsense, evidence-based gun safety legislation to better protect Michiganders from the threat of gun violence. BACKGROUND ON GUN VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH:

During Gun Violence Awareness Month, advocates across the country wear orange to commemorate the life of Hadiya Pendleton — a 15-year-old who was shot and killed on a playground in 2013, just one week after she performed with her high school marching band at former President Barack Obama’s second inauguration. The “Wear Orange” movement was organized by Hadiya’s friends and classmates to honor her life and all those whose lives have been impacted by gun violence. June 2, 2026, would have marked Hadiya’s 29th birthday.

Orange is now nationally recognized as the defining color of the gun violence prevention movement. By wearing orange and commemorating National Gun Violence Awareness Month, Michiganders will raise awareness about gun violence and honor the lives and lost human potential of those stolen by gun violence. The resolution also encourages all citizens to support their communities’ efforts to prevent the tragic effects of gun violence and to honor and value human life.
