LANSING, Mich. (Feb. 1, 2024) Today, the Senate passed Senate Resolution 89 declaring February 1, 2024, Blue Star Mother’s Day in Michigan. Sen. Veronica Klinefelt (D-Eastpointe), Chair of the Senate Veterans and Emergency Services Committee, along with her legislative colleagues voted in support of this bipartisan resolution.

“This day is a tribute not only to the sacrifices our service members make for the nation but also to the sacrifices of their mothers, stepmothers and grandmothers whose children have stepped forward to protect our nation,” said Sen. Klinefelt.

The Blue Star Mothers of America, Inc. was originally founded in Michigan in 1942 following the attack on Pearl Harbor in which Flint native Jack Pitcher died aboard the USS West Virginia. The organization was formally chartered by Congress in 1960 during the Vietnam War.

Blue Star Mothers is a group of women who support those in the armed forces, veterans and their families. Members assemble care packages to ship overseas, host events and fundraisers at home and participate in funeral and memorial ceremonies when called upon.

Sen. Klinefelt previously cosponsored bipartisan legislation to permanently designate Feb. 1 each year as Blue Star Mother’s Day in the state. The legislation, Senate Bill 235, was passed unanimously by the Senate and is now with the House for consideration.
